Investigation of a production load incident and stabilisation of the search infrastructure.
Problem
Requests from meta-externalagent were overwhelming Sphinx Search, which reported maxed_out during a production incident.
What I did
- Investigated the site and Sphinx Search under high load using server logs and CLI tools.
- Traced the excessive requests to the meta-externalagent User-Agent.
- Configured User-Agent-based request limits in Nginx to stop the problematic traffic.
- Checked the search service and website availability after the changes.
